What day is it?

At a risk of turning this blog into a puzzles blog, here is one which I found quite interesting -

Consider two persons, A and B. One tells the truth on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday while the other tells the truth on Thursday Friday and Saturday. They both tell the truth on Sunday.

A said, “Today is not Sunday”
B said, “Today is not Monday”

Which one is A and what day is it?

  • I must honestly admit I did not even think that there could be more than one solution! Yes, the word ONLY was implicitly assumed and should have been included.

  • Solution:
Obviously it was not a Sunday as both of them tells the truth on that day of the week.

Since it was not a Sunday the first person was telling the truth and the second person has to be lying. It must therefore be a Monday.

I thought the puzzle was challenging until I gave it to daughter. She solved it in less than a couple of minutes, making me feel both proud and humbled. But she is a statistician.
